Nike has released a powerful new ad that addressed racism while twisting the iconic tagline. The brand is famously known for its campaign promoting and encouraging all to get up and “Just Do It”.

Well, for now, they are urging people “Don’t Do it” – new messaging focused on race.

Friday evening on Instagram, Nike released a text-only 60-second video encouraging people to “For Once, Don’t Do It” – tweaked the brand message, the iconic slogan that’s recognized around the world.

The message reads;

“For once, Don’t Do it. Don’t pretend there’s not a problem in America. Don’t turn your back on racism. Don’t accept innocent lives being taken from us. Don’t make any more excuses. Don’t think this doesn’t affect you. Don’t sit back and be silent. Don’t think you can’t be part of the change. Let’s all be part of the change”.

This powerful and thought-provoking message was communicated four days after George Floyd, 46, died in police custody in Minnesota with his last moments caught on video. While being arrested, Floyd was held down by a Minneapolis police officer’s knee. The video shows Floyd pleading that he is in pain and can’t breathe. Later, his eyes shut and the pleas stop. He was pronounced dead shortly after. The officer was arrested Friday and charged with murder. This caused outrage in the United States, bringing in the controversial topic of racial inequality, and police brutality against African Americans.

This is not the first time Nike has used its iconic slogan for other than just sports. Nike has always been vocal and is also known for standing against bigotry, hatred, and inequality in all forms.

Nike’s competitor Adidas, shared the post, with the message that read, “Together is how we move forward. Together is how we make change”.
